UVC Light Offers Proven Air Purification Solutions

Light is broken into colors and measured in wavelengths, referred to as nanometers (nm).  Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength shorter than visible light and includes light measured from 10 nm to 400 nm. Highly effective UVC light emits the most significant radiative power within the UVC band of 100 nm to 280 nm.  UV light generated precisely at 185 nm effectively produces ozone which is required to eradicate odor-causing VOCs in the air such as sulfides, mercaptans and ammonia.

UVC Light Radiation Destroys Harmful Germs

The nucleic acid absorbs the UV radiation, rearranging genetic properties that interfere with the cell’s ability to reproduce.  When a cell is unable to reproduce it cannot multiply to infectious numbers and is considered dead.

DNA experiences maximum absorption of UVC radiation at 260 nm, with UV lights in the 254 nm range operating near the level of DNA maximum absorption.  UVC germicidal lamps convert electricity into ultraviolet radiation, converting up to 40% of electrical power into UV radiation at an effective 254 nm.  UVC germicidal lamps, however, are not all made the same.

The LightSources Group designs and manufactures the most effective UVC light products available today.  There are two main types of UVC germicidal lamps, Low-Pressure Mercury Discharge and Medium Pressure Mercury Discharge.  

Low-Pressure Mercury Discharge UVC lamps are the most common type of germicidal lamps which are similar in appearance to ordinary fluorescent lamps, although there is no fluorescent phosphor in the lamp tube.  A UVC germicidal lamp is also made from soda lime or fused quartz glass rather than standard borosilicate glass, which allows for UV light exposure at 185 nm for an ozone producing lamp, or 253.7 nm for effective disinfection, to pass through the glass unmodified.  You may see visible light from a Low-Pressure Mercury Discharge lamp due to radiation bands from the mercury.

The second most common type of UVC germicidal lamp is Medium Pressure Mercury Discharge, which has a similarity more toward a High-Intensity Discharge, HID, lamp than a fluorescent lamp.  Medium-pressure UVC lamps radiate UVC radiation in a broad band instead of a single line and are commonly used in water treatment systems due to the intense radiation. Medium Pressure UVC lamps emit a bright bluish-white visible light.
