UVC lamps have been shown to be highly effective in combatting a wide range of bacteria and viruses, including the dreaded SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. UVC lamps for SARS-CoV-2 and UVC robots are being deployed in many healthcare and commercial facilities to stop the spread of harmful germs and improve the health and comfort of people in various commercial environments.

Modern disinfection applications are now utilizing the many benefits of UVC lamps, although it took many years since the discovery of germicidal UVC radiation for UVC lamps to become a “go-to” solution for disinfection.

Ultraviolet (UV) light has proven effective at eliminating the threat from many well-known viruses, dating as far back as 1877 when the first scientific study was recorded, concluding that Ultraviolet light provided powerful disinfection properties. Further studies in the early 20th century confirmed that Ultraviolet light could prevent the spread of infectious diseases on surfaces and in the air, yet it would take many more decades for science and medicine to harness the power of Ultraviolet radiation.

With the increase of tuberculosis in the 1980s, Ultraviolet light was once again brought to the forefront of medicine and used to combat the spread of this highly contagious and deadly infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, offers guidelines for the use of UV lamps to combat tuberculosis infection. Ultraviolet lamps are now being used in many widespread germicidal applications to eliminate harmful pathogens in air, water and on surfaces.

Even with an increase in the use of UV lamps for disinfection, there are still many environments that stand to gain a great deal and improve public health by utilizing Ultraviolet light disinfection systems.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength that is shorter than visible light and longer than x-rays, emitted at 100 to 400 nanometers (nm). The UV spectrum is divided into:

UV radiation emitted predominantly at 253.7 nm effectively inactivates microorganisms and is referred to as Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). UVGI interrupts the transmission of pathogenic organisms, including bacteria, viruses, mold, and even bioterrorism agents.

Infectious diseases are transmitted by various means, through human touch or secretions, droplets in the air, and on surfaces. UVC irradiation is proven to inactivate many microorganisms such as vegetative bacteria, spores, fungal spores and viruses. Individual species may be more resistant to UVC exposure and require the proper fluence rate for inactivation.

Vegetative bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, includes individual species such as:

Viruses that are susceptible to UVGI include:

Both vegetative bacteria and viruses are generally most susceptible to UV inactivation, followed by microorganism groups, including Mycobacteria, bacterial spores, and finally, fungal spores.

Mycobacteria includes the following species:

Bacterial spores include:

Fungal spores include:

Spore-forming bacteria and fungi also have vegetative forms, which are markedly more susceptible to UV inactivation than other spore forms. The effectiveness of Ultraviolet light disinfection for the inactivation of tuberculosis, measles, and influenza was established in various medical journals (Escombe et al. 2009; Mphaphlele et al. 2015).

UVGI is proven to be effective in air handling systems to prevent the spread of disease through circulated air and on HVAC equipment surfaces. UVC disinfection is becoming increasingly popular as concerns about the quality of indoor air increases. Only a professional should install UVC lamps in your HVAC system, which can be beneficial in both furnaces and air conditioning (AC) systems.

Harmful pathogens such as measles, tuberculosis bacterium, and influenza viruses are all infectious organisms that are known to be transmitted indoors by shared air space between infected and susceptible persons. This occurs in congregated spaces, such as within a room, and beyond a room, such as in corridors and even through ventilation ductwork.

Low-pressure mercury vapor lamps are the standard source of UVC lamps in commercial systems, with an optimum wavelength of 253.7 nm. UVC lamps in air handling systems improve indoor air quality (IAQ), enhancing the health, comfort, and productivity of occupants.

According to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Indoor Environments Division in July of 2018, regarding the use of air cleaners for residential use, there are two types of UVGI applications for residences. UVC lamps are designed for airstream disinfection to reduce microorganisms as they flow through the HVAC system or they can be designed for surface disinfection to prevent microorganism growth on cooling coils in the HVAC unit. Numerous studies show that the most important components of a UVGI system are the type of UV light and ballast, air velocity, temperature, relative humidity, and duct reflectivity.

When UV lamp disinfection systems are used in air handling units (AHU) in conjunction with a particulate filtration system, efficacy improved to 98%. If a particulate filter removes 85% of agents from an incoming airstream and UVGI eliminates 85% of microorganisms with single-pass efficacy, it provides an effective incremental benefit. This study showed a reduction in CFU counts of 99% in just one month when Tier 1 UVGI in AHU was used in a major hospital in Mumbai.

The conclusion of multiple studies shows that UV light for disinfection in air and surface treatment systems is effective, economical, and flexible for hospital air disinfection with no residual side effects.

LightSources, along with our strategic partner, LightTech, provides benefits to OEMs of all sizes with proprietary, unique germicidal solutions. We provide UV lamps for disinfection applications such as:

We offer a wide range of innovative, high-quality UVC germicidal lamps as well as custom-designed products to meet your specific application requirements. Our UV lighting engineers design high-tech UV lamps with custom phosphor blends based on a deep technical knowledge of UV radiation.

We provide full OEM support with prototype development and customized germicidal solutions. Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation emitted in various wavelengths, either UVA, UVB, or UVC, with short-wave UVC having the most powerful, germ-killing properties. UVC light emitted at 254 nanometers (nm) is proven to destroy harmful pathogens and microorganisms with high efficacy.

Disinfection in hospitals has always been of great concern, although recent events with hospitals across the country reaching near capacity make cleanliness and disinfection even more important. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are infections that occur within 48 hours of hospital admission, within three days after discharge, or up to 30 days following an operation. The Centers for Disease Control, CDC, estimates that 1 in 31 patients in U.S. hospitals contract an HAI, many caused by serious antibiotic-resistant bacteria that may lead to sepsis or death.

Hospitals provide life-saving miracles every day; they are also a place where numerous contagious viruses and bacteria could be lurking in patient rooms, waiting rooms and hallways. Manual cleaning in hospitals is often not enough to eliminate harmful pathogens with acceptable effectiveness. Decontamination of patient rooms prior to subsequent admissions is critical for many reasons:

Many factors play a role in the effectiveness of manual cleanings, such as the human factor. Some reasons why manual cleaning does not provide enough protection include:

According to a report by the National Institutes of Health, Evaluation of an Ultraviolet C (UVC) Light-Emitting Device for Disinfection of High Touch Surfaces in Hospital Critical Areas, many studies demonstrate that current cleaning strategies in hospital rooms are inadequate, and 50% or more of hospital surfaces may go untouched and uncleaned after manual disinfection. Manual cleaning is plagued with random variations, such as the improper use of cleaning cloths and solutions that can spread harmful pathogens.

UVC light is replicated in UVC germicidal lamps, designed and engineered to emit the precise wavelength necessary for disinfection. UV lamp manufacturers like LightSources are expert UV lamp manufacturers in designing UV lamps to obtain the perfect germicidal emissions necessary. Ozone producing lamps emit UV electromagnetic radiation at 185 nm and are effective in certain water and air applications and also eliminate foul odor and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.

UVC radiation quickly penetrates the DNA of harmful bacteria and virus cells and alters the DNA so they no longer are capable of replicating. A virus cell that cannot replicate is considered dead and harmless. UVC light is proven to eliminate a wide range of viruses and bacteria, including superbugs like MERS, SARS, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), C. Difficile, and many others.

UVC germicidal lamps are used in a wide range of germicidal systems, such as UV air purification systems, UV water treatment systems, and surface disinfection applications. UV light in hospitals can be used in many systems to disinfect:

There are numerous ways that hospitals and many other public places can help prevent the spread of harmful diseases by utilizing germicidal UV lamps. UV light disinfection systems can be found in airports, libraries, schools, retail, commercial, industrial, restaurants, cafeterias, and many other establishments.

Hospitals aimed at improving infection control strategies can realize significant benefits by utilizing UV light disinfection systems in addition to their current cleaning practices. UV light provides many benefits in hospitals, such as:

UV disinfection systems require high-quality UVC germicidal lamps designed for their specific application.

LightSources and LightTech are global industry leaders in UV lamp manufacturing, providing a wide range of UVC germicidal lamps for any disinfection application. UVC light destroys the nucleic acid and disrupts the DNA of many types of germs. This renders them unable to perform vital cellular functions, including the ability to reproduce or infect.

UVC light is used for disinfection in many types of applications, such as:

Using UV light for disinfection is the preferred method in numerous commercial, industrial, and residential disinfection systems.

UVC light is used for air disinfection in many applications and environments. UVC germicidal lamps designed to emit wavelengths at 254 nm deliver powerful germicidal effects and eliminate many airborne contaminants. Germicidal lamps can be installed in upper room UVGI systems or can also be installed in HVAC systems. UVC ozone lamps are designed to emit wavelengths at 185 nm and are a proven oxidizer to eliminate airborne contaminants, foul odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

UV air disinfection systems are popular in many commercial and industrial applications, such as in hospitals, schools, public places, residential homes, and industrial settings. UV light air purification systems help some industries meet environmental regulations for clean air requirements.

UVC lamps are used in many UV water purification systems to eliminate harmful contaminants, viruses, bacteria, and even some germs that chlorine cannot kill, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. UV lamps are helping to keep water clean in many industries and applications such as institutions, including hospitals and nursing homes, industries such as pharmaceuticals, laboratories, pulp and paper, food and beverage, restaurants, wastewater treatment, pool and spa, and more.

UV light helps to prevent the buildup of harmful germs, even antibiotic-resistant superbugs, on surfaces in hospitals, restaurants, and many other environments. UV lamps in hospitals help to prevent the spread of germs in patient rooms and operating rooms, as well as to disinfect medical devices and equipment.

UV surface disinfection helps restaurants prevent foodborne illnesses in food prep areas, including kitchens, counters, refrigerators, and freezers. UVC lamps effectively eliminate many harmful germs such as E. coli and salmonella and can even prevent grease buildup when installed in kitchen hood exhaust systems. This keeps commercial kitchens cleaner and mitigates the risk of commercial kitchen fires. UVC lamps have many useful purposes for disinfecting, cleaning, and protecting.

There are many benefits of using UV lamps for disinfection in addition to effectively eliminating harmful germs. UVC germicidal lamps are effective, affordable, and safe. While most UVC disinfection systems should operate without coming in direct contact with humans, they operate efficiently and without the use of harmful chemicals. UVC lamps provide effective disinfection without the need to purchase, store, or dispose of harmful chemicals and without putting off any harmful byproducts.

UVC lamps from LightSources provide many additional benefits, as UVC germicidal lamps must be designed and engineered to emit specific wavelengths to meet the disinfection demands of the application.
