What is UV Air Sterilization?
Germicidal UVC technology provides a cost-effective and efficient method to disinfect and sterilize the air with no byproducts and no hazardous waste. UV radiation emitted in the UVC wavelength, specifically at 254 nm, is proven to have the most powerful germicidal effects. UVC radiation is effective at eliminating the threat from bacteria, viruses, mold spores, dust mites, fungi, and harmful airborne microorganisms in UV air sterilization systems.
UVC ozone lamps are designed to emit wavelengths closer to 185 nm, which are useful in many types of UV air treatment systems. Ozone is a proven oxidizer which offers some advantages as ozone can be carried through the air to disinfect areas that direct UV radiation cannot reach. UVC ozone lamps remove foul odors from the air as well as eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ammonia, mercaptans and sulfides.
UVC germicidal lamps eliminate airborne viruses and bacteria by penetrating the DNA of these harmful microorganisms and rendering them unable to replicate. When these cells can no longer reproduce, they are considered harmless with the threat of infection eliminated.
Types of UV Air Sterilization Systems
Germicidal UVC lamps are used in different types of UV air treatment systems such as installed in HVAC systems or in localized upper room disinfection units. UV lamps in HVAC systems can be installed to sterilize the air as it passes through the air ducts and can also sterilize equipment to prevent the buildup of mold and fungi on HVAC cooling coils.
Upper room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems are also proven to be effective at eliminating airborne tuberculosis, with the CDC offering guidelines for the environmental control of tuberculosis with UVGI. Another method of UV air sterilization is with the use of UVC robots, which are gaining in popularity and can be deployed to sterilize air and surfaces in many environments.
Where Can UV Air Sterilization Systems be Used?
UVC lamps provide healthier, cleaner air to many environments and industries such as:
- Healthcare and hospitals
- Nursing homes
- Schools and colleges
- Scientific laboratories
- Commercial and public places
- Industrial manufacturing
- Residential homes
- Applications needing odor control
UVC air purification is extremely beneficial and hospitals and healthcare settings like doctor’s offices where patients may already have an immunocompromised condition. According to a study by the National Institutes of Health, the use of UVC sterilization utilized in conjunction with manual cleaning processes is particularly useful in high-touch high-traffic places with a high bioburden. UV air purification in hospitals helps to protect people with respiratory infections and can reduce symptoms of asthma.
Residents of nursing homes benefit with extra protection against airborne disease, protecting an already vulnerable population.
Restaurant owners employing UV air purification systems provide a cleaner environment to their patrons, with protections against airborne disease.
Several industrial processes such as manufacturing plastics, rubber, wood and surface treatments, printing applications and others produce toxic chemicals that contaminate the air. UV air sterilization systems protect employees in these environments that can suffer respiratory symptoms without air purification and sterilization. Many industries must also meet environmental regulations with limits on air pollution. UV air sterilization can help these industries to be compliant with air emissions while protecting staff and the public.
UVC air purification provides valuable health benefits to all of these applications and others and can be used just about anywhere.
UV Air Purification for Odor Control
UVC ozone lamps used for order control provide benefits to many applications such as:
- Wastewater treatment plants
- Food processing plants
- Animal kennels
- Industrial manufacturing processes
Air sterilization with odor control provides many benefits to these odor producing applications including a healthier environment for employees and reducing odors affecting nearby resident. Wastewater treatment plants, for example, produce hydrogen sulfide based odors that are a health concern to operators safety and can be a new sense to nearby residents and other public facilities.
